Trip Down Under - Brisbane, Australia - late April - mid May 2011

Ed and I went to Australia late April till mid May.  Ed for work and Myra for seeing the sights.  We landed in Brisbane and stayed for  3 days and then went to Melbourne for 2 weeks.  We went back to Brisbane for 2 days and then off to Noosa for a team building workshop. Brisbane is a lovely city located the Brisbane River.  We stayed in the Hilton Hotel which opened on to Queen Street Mall which is a pedestrian mall filled with open air restaurants, large and small department stores, and arcades. Ed and I meet everyday for lunch in the Queen Street Mall.

The Tourist information center was located in the mall and I was able to get lots of information on things to keep me busy.  Brisbane offered a free walking tour of the points of interest in city center,  free walking tour of Brisbane Botanic Gardens, as well as two buses which made a loop around the outside of the city center.  I found about the buses a little late but I did get to go on the walking tour of the city the day before we left for Noosa.

I spent my days walking around seeing the sights.  I took a guided walking tour of the city which highlighted the architecture of various landmark buildings.

Brisbane City Hall opened in 1930 now closed for urgent upgrades and repairs.  In front of City Hall is King Georg Square.
Most photographed Kangaroos.

Albert Street Uniting Church (Methodist)  opened in 1889. Gothic style architecture with most prominent feature is the spire rising 137 feet from the street.

Inside, Albert Street Uniting Church the organ originally built in 1889.  The organ has 2,250 pipes.
School of Art - 1860's

Central Station 1889

Post Office opened in 1872 and still in service.
Anzac Square War Memorial. Eternal Flame, War Memorials for World Wars. The stairs linking the Shrine with the Square are 19 on one side and 18 on the other - 1918 the year the Great War ended.

Brisbane Arcade 1923

St. Stephen's Chapel, the first church in Queensland- 1850.  And if you can notice the street art.

Kangaroos

People's Place 1911 . Given its present role as a backpacker's hostel, it comes as no surprise to learn that this was originally built by the Salvation Army where 'working class accommodation' was provided to travelers.

I spent an afternoon walking in Brisbane's Botanic Gardens, it's original city park and gardens. The garden includes the first old plants to be formally planted.

It was very beautiful and peaceful.

In the middle of the garden is the Old Government House which was completed in 1862 and served as a home for Queensland's first eleven governors.

I had just made it to the bridge and I was about to walk toward the water, my favorite part, and all the heavens opened up and I had to walk back to the hotel in the pouring rain.  Rain does seem to follow us.

The only real time Ed had to sight see was the second Saturday we were in Brisbane.  The first Saturday we traveled to Melbourne. We took a ride on the City Sight tour bus.  The Windmill built by convicts in 1828, this was the first industrial building in Brisbane.  It is the oldest windmill tower in Australia. It helped keep the time for the citizens with the firing of a cannon and dropping of its time ball at 1:00 p.m.

Top of Mt. Coot-tha offers a wonderful view of the city and surrounding area.

Brisbane City stretching across out to Moerton Bay and around to the distant mountains.

Next stop Botanic Gardens at Mt. Coot-tha. Queensland's ( the state that Brisbane is in) premier sub-tropical Botanic Gardens, 52 hectare.

Beautiful purple roses.

Ugly Bird, I think it is some relation to a turkey.

Strange root system

Whose got you now?

Next stop City Out Look view of Brisbane and Moreton Bay.

Every City seems to have it's China Town, Nothing like Yokohama.

Part of the City Sight Tour was a ride on one of the City Cats which are catamaran boats that travel up and down the Brisbane Rive like a fast ferry.  You can get on and off just like the bus portion of the tour.  This was, of course, our favorite part.  We love being on the river.

Customs House completed in 1889 is a cultural, educational and heritage facility of The University of Queensland presently.

View of city from the river.

The Story Bridge is a cantilever bridge spanning the Brisbane River.

Dinner at a restaurant over looking the river after our day of touring.

The last night in Brisbane we walked across to the South Bank of Brisbane for dinner.

Walking back to the other bank of the river where we were staying.

The building in red lights is Conrad Treasury Casino and Hotel which was originally the government's treasury.
The Treasury Casino by day, one of  Australia's grandest heritage buildings. Built in three stages from 1886 and 1928.
